Profile

Should you have the pleasure of meeting Barbara, you might be expecting to encounter a typical 'pushy' showbiz person. Nothing could be further from the truth. Barbara is quiet, modest and unassuming.

Only when she sings does the quality of her beautiful voice reveal a deep inner confidence. A confidence which only the true greats possess. One Radio presenter describes her as "the local girl with the international voice". We cannot improve on that description!

Barbara Allen

Barbara first appeared on television, at sixteen, when she was introduced by George Hamilton IV, on a BBC NI programme, ’Make Mine Country’. A programme she would later co-present for two years, along with Irish country star Brendan Quinn.

With a face the camera loves, and a voice to match, it’s not surprising that many television appearances followed, and Barbara has since appeared on all the main Irish TV channels, BBC, UTV and RTE. She also gained a ‘runners up’ spot on a BBC TV nationwide talent show which preceded the ‘Simon Cowell’ days.

Another highlight, in recent years, was again meeting, and this time sharing the stage, with her childhood ‘favourite female singer’, Crystal Gayle, while filming ‘Hugo and Friends’ on BBC NI TV.

Playing the princess, opposite The Krankies, in the Christmas pantomime ‘Aladdin’ at the Belfast’s Grand Opera House, must be considered the greatest ‘stage’ achievement of her career, to date.

Barbara’s recordings have of course, and are still, being played on radio, all over the world. Her recent version of the song ‘Nobody’, surprised everyone, by being included on the ‘daytime playlists’, of quite a few UK and Irish ‘pop’ radio stations.

She has twice been nominated for ‘British Country Single of the Year’, and her country/gospel offering, ‘Is It So Amazing’, last year reached number two, in the European Gospel charts.

Towards the end of last year, Barbara was delighted to be asked to join the U105 Radio team, and she now presents their Friday night country programme from 7pm to 9pm.

She has several new recordings ‘in the can’ and hopes to complete a new album this year. Apart from that, she hopes, through her radio show, to ‘convert’ a few more people to her beloved country music.
